That extra dessert

"There are poems inside you that paper can't handle"

Growing up in a society of double standard is backbreaking. I've noticed people normalize the idea of beauty to perfect skin and perfect body. I've seen teenagers who hurt themselves just because of the stupid notions about beauty we've adopted. Someones' beauty is not something that has to be voted or determined on. There are people who cry themselves to sleep, skip lunch so that losing pounds will gain them space in somebody else's lives. Why is it that we've normalized insults regarding appearances?

I have friends whom I know will grow to be the boldest women in the world but I've seen them become insecure about their weight and about how they aren't fair enough or how they do not look so good in the dress they love to wear. Everybody's heard this a billion times and I'm just going to make it a billion and a one times,
Beauty is when you appreciate yourself.

But it's not just till how we think about ourselves. Self acceptance is important and more to it is learning to appreciate others for who they are. How many times have we thrown an opinion about a random stranger minding their own business about the size of their body or about what they are wearing or how they look like? Going to a family gathering, how many times have you commented on how your cousin gained or lost too much weight? While casually having lunch do you remember discussing a diet with your friends to become 'center of attraction ' in school? When scrolling through posts about self love at what level have you convinced yourself that it's all crap and looking perfect is all that works out in the end?
Our small act of judgment leads somebody to hate themselves for their entire life. Check on your friends and family but sometimes check on yourself too. Sometimes we're the toxic person in other's lives. Sometimes our little behaviors makes us the negativity.
We're always talking about breaking stereotypes. But what else are we doing except talking about it?
Being from Nepal I've learnt a lot about diversity and its importance. The cultural diversification of the country holds big significance. For me, that is not just what it is to diversity. We all are different, different in thoughts and different in body shapes. Standing with a hand of different finger sizes why do we expect beautiful to be an adjective to give such narrow description? This diversity in how we look is where the beauty lies.

Next time you stand in front of a mirror wearing that dress you love so much, I hope you don't tell yourself that you don't have the body to wear that. The idea of a perfect body is yet another way of modeling agencies to grow.

In the past, I've compared myself and made myself feel bad about not fitting in. Nothing upsets me more than the fact that I've been judgemental about myself . I questioned what I am, and I tried to change myself for somebody. Now that I look back I feel stupid for having let my self-respect down for even once. Right now writing this, I promise myself I'm never again going to doubt my worth or ever let somebody make me feel I'm not good enough. I hope the person reading this will never let somebody else barge into their lives to tell them they are not perfect or exquisite enough.
